Sulfonated Castor Oil vs Castor Oil Ethoxylate: What Is the Difference?

Sulfonated castor oil and castor oil ethoxylate begin with the same natural oil, and both are used for wetting and emulsification. They are not interchangeable, however. Different chemical modifications give them different ionic characters, compatibility profiles and areas of use.

Two Different Routes from Castor Oil


Sulfonated castor oil, also known as Turkey red oil, is an anionic surfactant. Sulfonation introduces hydrophilic groups into the castor oil structure, allowing the modified oil to disperse readily in water. It is valued for penetration, wetting and the emulsification of oils.


Castor oil ethoxylate is produced by reacting castor oil with ethylene oxide. The polyoxyethylene chains added during this process create a nonionic surfactant. Its performance is influenced by the degree of ethoxylation: as the EO content changes, so do water solubility, HLB value and physical form.


This is the central difference. Sulfonated castor oil carries an anionic charge in water, while castor oil ethoxylate is nonionic.


Where the Difference Matters


Textile processing remains a major use for Turkey red oil. It improves fibre wetting and helps keep oils dispersed in the treatment bath, which is useful in dyeing auxiliaries and leather fatliquoring. The same combination of wetting and emulsifying properties also supports its use in some cutting fluids and pesticide formulations.


Its ionic character must be considered when building a formulation. Compatibility can be affected by cationic materials, multivalent metal ions and high electrolyte levels. A clear concentrate may become cloudy or form deposits when incompatible components are introduced.


Castor oil ethoxylate generally offers greater formulation flexibility. As a nonionic surfactant, it can be used with many anionic, nonionic and cationic ingredients. Depending on the grade, it may serve as an emulsifier or wetting agent in textile scouring, metalworking fluids, industrial cleaning, agrochemical emulsions, personal care products and water-based coatings.


Hard-water or electrolyte tolerance often makes an ethoxylated grade the more practical starting point for demanding aqueous systems. Even so, tolerance is not unlimited, and the selected EO grade still needs to match the formulation.


Selecting the Appropriate Product


Choose sulfonated castor oil when strong wetting, penetration and anionic emulsification are required, particularly in textile or leather processing. Relevant purchasing parameters include solids content, pH, SO₃ content and appearance.


Castor oil ethoxylate is more suitable when nonionic compatibility or a specific hydrophilic-lipophilic balance is needed. Polykem grades range from EL-10 to EL-80. Lower-EO grades are more oil-compatible, while higher-EO grades have greater hydrophilicity and may change from an oily liquid to a paste or solid.


The application name alone is not enough to make the final selection. Oil type, water hardness, temperature, electrolyte level and the other surfactants in the system can all change the result. Bench testing with the complete formulation provides a more reliable answer than substituting one castor oil derivative for the other on a one-to-one basis.
