It Is Not the Same as PEG 400 or PEG 6000
Many buyers see “PEG-7” and assume it is another conventional polyethylene glycol grade, similar to PEG 400 or PEG 6000. The naming logic, however, is different.
For conventional PEG products, the number generally represents approximate average molecular weight. In PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, the number refers to an average of about seven ethylene oxide units.
The ingredient is produced from glyceryl cocoate through ethoxylation. Its glyceryl cocoate portion has an affinity for oils, while the ethoxylated portion improves water compatibility. This combination explains why it is used for emollience, solubilization and emulsification rather than as a general-purpose polyethylene glycol.
Its Role in Cleansing Products
A body wash needs to remove sebum and dirt, yet consumers rarely judge it by cleansing power alone. Skin feel after rinsing also matters. PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate can soften the after-feel of surfactant-based cleansers and reduce the dry sensation sometimes associated with strong washing systems.
In makeup removers and facial cleansers, its oil affinity helps disperse makeup, sebum and other oily material. At the same time, its hydrophilic portion makes it easier to incorporate into water-based products. It may also help distribute fragrance oils and other oil-soluble ingredients more evenly.
PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate is not usually the main cleansing surfactant. It is added alongside the primary surfactant system to adjust mildness, appearance and sensory performance.
The same properties are useful beyond facial and body cleansing. Liquid hand cleansers, shampoos, pet shampoos, concentrated dishwashing liquids and multipurpose cleaners may also use the ingredient where oil removal and water compatibility need to be balanced.
Its contribution will vary with the rest of the formula. A sulfate-based body wash, a mild facial cleanser and a makeup remover do not place the same demands on the ingredient, even when all three contain PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate.
What to Check When Selecting a Grade
Appearance is a practical starting point during incoming inspection. The material is normally a pale yellow to yellow transparent liquid with a slight characteristic odor. Changes such as unusual darkening, separation or visible foreign matter should be checked against the approved sample and batch documentation.
Polykem’s specification includes an acid value of 0–5 mgKOH/g, a saponification value of 90–100 mgKOH/g, an iodine value of 0–5 g/100g and water content of no more than 0.5%. These values help purchasing and quality teams compare batches and confirm that the supplied material meets the agreed specification.
They do not, by themselves, predict the result in a finished cleanser. Surfactant type, fragrance, oil content and processing conditions may all affect clarity, viscosity and skin feel. A small-scale trial with the actual formulation remains the most useful way to assess suitability.
