Polypropylene Glycol (PPG) is used in industrial formulations for foam control, lubrication and processing support. Its properties vary with molecular weight: lower grades are less viscous and easier to mix, while higher grades become more hydrophobic and less soluble in water.
Polykem supplies Polypropylene Glycol (PPG) grades from PPG-200 to PPG-8000. Selecting a suitable grade depends on the required function, operating conditions and compatibility with other materials in the system.
PPG in Defoamer Formulations
Foam can interfere with mixing, pumping and filling, reduce usable vessel capacity and leave defects on coatings or other finished surfaces.
Higher-molecular-weight PPG has limited water solubility. In suitable aqueous systems, this controlled incompatibility can help disrupt the liquid film surrounding foam bubbles. PPG may therefore be used as a base fluid or functional component in defoamers for industrial cleaning, textile processing, coatings and water treatment.
PPG-2000 and PPG-4000 are representative grades for initial evaluation. Their average molecular weight ranges are 1800–2200 and 3700–4300 respectively. Compared with lighter grades, they provide greater hydrophobicity, with PPG-4000 offering the heavier option.
PPG does not necessarily form a complete commercial defoamer by itself. Finished formulations may also contain emulsifiers, hydrophobic particles, mineral oils, silicones or other foam-control ingredients. Excessive compatibility with the liquid phase can limit defoaming performance, while insufficient compatibility may cause separation or surface defects.
Lubrication and Processing Support
The flexible polyether structure of PPG provides lubricity with relatively low volatility. It can be considered for metalworking fluids, textile processing oils, specialty lubricants, rubber processing and mold-release systems.
PPG-600 and PPG-1000 have average molecular weight ranges of 540–660 and 900–1100. These medium-range grades combine manageable handling with useful lubricating properties, making them possible starting points for metalworking, textile and other industrial fluid applications.
Where lower viscosity and easier liquid dosing are required, PPG-200 or PPG-400 may be more suitable. These grades can be evaluated as liquid carriers or processing aids in systems containing polar ingredients.
For oil-based formulations, coatings, sealants or polymer processing, heavier grades such as PPG-6000 and PPG-8000 offer higher viscosity and stronger hydrophobic character. They should not be treated as direct substitutes for lower-molecular-weight grades because their solubility and processing behavior differ.
Use in Polyurethane Systems
PPG is also an important polyether polyol for polyurethane production. In this application, its terminal hydroxyl groups react with isocyanates and become part of the polymer structure. It therefore functions as a reactive raw material rather than only as a lubricant or temporary processing aid.
PPG-2000 to PPG-4000 may be evaluated for flexible polyurethane foams, elastomers and related materials. Grade selection can influence reaction behavior, flexibility and the mechanical properties of the finished polymer.
Hydroxyl value is particularly important. PPG-2000 has a specified hydroxyl value of 51–62 mgKOH/g, while PPG-4000 is specified at 26–30 mgKOH/g. Molecular weight and hydroxyl value should be reviewed together when selecting a grade for polyurethane synthesis.
