C5 Hydrocarbon Resin in Hot Melt Adhesives and Road Marking Paints

2026-07-07 0 Leave me a message

For many adhesive and coating manufacturers, C5 Hydrocarbon Resin is not purchased only as a general petroleum resin. The real question is usually where it will be used: hot melt adhesives, pressure-sensitive adhesives, road marking paints, rubber modification or other industrial materials.

Different applications need different resin behavior. A resin used in packaging adhesive is not judged in the same way as a resin used in hot melt road marking paint. Compatibility, softening point, color, thermal stability and melt viscosity can all affect how the material performs in production.

C5 Resin for Hot Melt Adhesives

In hot melt adhesive production, C5 Hydrocarbon Resin is usually added for tack. The resin helps the adhesive grip the substrate more easily and can also support wetting and bonding during application. For packaging adhesives, tapes or glue sticks, this matters because the adhesive needs to melt, flow and set within a short processing window.

Polykem supplies C5 Hydrocarbon Resin grades such as A2095, A1095 and A1100 for hot melt adhesive applications. These grades are commonly discussed for packaging adhesives, pressure-sensitive adhesives, tapes and glue sticks, where the resin must blend well with the base polymer and remain stable during heating and coating.

In actual production, adhesive manufacturers often compare more than one indicator. Compatibility with the existing system comes first, followed by resin color, melt viscosity and tack performance after processing. A suitable grade should help the adhesive keep workable viscosity without losing bonding performance.

Compatibility with Adhesive and Rubber Systems

C5 Hydrocarbon Resin is often used in adhesive systems based on Styrene Isoprene Styrene (SIS), Styrene Butadiene Styrene (SBS), Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA), natural rubber or synthetic rubber. In these systems, C5 resin is usually used to adjust tack, adhesion and processing behavior.

Alongside C5 Hydrocarbon Resin, Polykem can also supply Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR), Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (HNBR), Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR), Butadiene Rubber (BR), Styrene Butadiene Rubber Latex and other synthetic rubber materials.

C5 resin does not replace these rubber materials. Instead, it works as a tackifying or modifying resin in systems where adhesion, compatibility and processing performance need to be balanced.

C5 Resin for Hot Melt Road Marking Paint

C5 Hydrocarbon Resin is also used in hot melt road marking paint. In this application, the resin helps bind pigments, fillers and other components together while supporting processing during heating and application.

Polykem A100 is designed for hot melt road marking paint. For road marking paint producers, resin selection may affect pigment affinity, flow behavior, film formation, color appearance and application stability.

Compared with adhesive applications, road marking paint has a different focus. The resin needs to work well with pigments and fillers, remain processable under heating conditions and support the final marking material after application.

Key Indicators for C5 Resin Selection

When customers source C5 Hydrocarbon Resin, several indicators may affect grade selection, including softening point, color, thermal stability, melt viscosity, acid value, bromine value, ash content and molecular weight.

For hot melt adhesives, softening point, color and melt viscosity are often discussed first. For road marking paint, pigment affinity, heat stability and processability may become more important.

The final choice should depend on the customer’s application system, production temperature, base polymer or filler system, and performance requirements.
