Start with the Intended Application


SBR rubber is used in tires, footwear, hoses, belts, seals and other industrial rubber products. These applications do not place the same demands on the compound. In some formulations, it may also be blended with Polybutadiene Rubber (BR).


Before requesting product information, describe the intended rubber product and the planned mixing and forming process. It is also useful to provide the target hardness, mechanical properties, abrasion and aging requirements, other polymers in the blend, and any customer or industry standards that must be met.

Review Mooney Viscosity


Mooney viscosity is one of the first values many processors review. It provides a practical indication of the raw rubber’s viscosity under a defined test condition.


A change in Mooney viscosity may be noticed during mastication, filler incorporation, extrusion or calendaring. Material outside the expected range can alter mixing behavior and make batch-to-batch processing less predictable.

Check Bound Styrene and Oil Extension


Bound styrene content affects the balance of properties within SBR. It may influence hardness, abrasion behavior, resilience and compatibility with the rest of the formulation.


If the offered material is oil-extended, confirm the oil type and oil content. Oil extension changes how the material is handled and must be considered when calculating the full compound recipe.


These details should be stated clearly in the product specification. When replacing an existing material, compare the proposed product with the approved reference rather than relying only on the general name “SBR.”

Review Volatile Matter, Ash and Appearance


Volatile matter and ash are useful checks when reviewing SBR quality specifications. Unexpected results may point to moisture, residual processing materials or other differences that need further investigation.


During incoming inspection, check the bale, wrapping and label for damage, contamination, foreign material, unusual color variation or incomplete batch identification. Packaging exposed to excessive heat, water or poor transport conditions may also require further inspection.

  • Cure behavior: scorch time and vulcanization characteristics
  • Finished properties: hardness, tensile strength, abrasion, aging and surface quality
